Sites Unseen

By now you must have noticed our website's recent facelift. Not exactly a drastic makeover, but we're pretty excited about it because we think it makes the site more user-friendly.Whether through our Twitter feeds (@RIMonthly, @TheDishRI), e-newsletters, Facebook page or on the site itself, we're always striving to improve the magazine's ever-important web presence. And what our readers want always comes into play when we're deciding whether to go ahead with a new idea. So don't hesitate to drop us a line telling us how we're doing on the web --  and what you'd like to see more of here on RIMonthly.com.

Notable Names at Bryant's Women's Summit

Bryant University just announced its line-up for its Women's Summit 2010. The actual event doesn't take place until March 11, but if you register before February 22 you'll save $25 (the fee is $150 before the 22nd, $175 after). Keynote speakers include the chairman and CEO of Citizens Financial Group and RBS Americas, Ellen Alemeny, and former Delta Airline exec and now star of the show "Judge Hatchett," Judge Glenda Hatchett. But the real draw will most likely be makeup artist to the stars Bobbi Brown. According to the bio on the Summit website, Brown started her cosmetics company in 1991with a handful of lipsticks and now runs a veritable empire of makeup, the likes of which can be found everywhere from backstage at runway shows to the beautifying arsenal of nearly every...

Shaking and Baking

Vanity Fair had an interesting article (in, uh, December...I'm a little behind on my reading) on our national addiction to cuteness. Exhibit A: cupcakes. Well, actually, exhibit A was this You Tube video, and exhibit B was the website Cute Overload, with its pictures of "puppehs," "kittehs" and "bun-buns" (that last one is bunnies to you English speakers), but then the writer gets down to cupcakes.I really can't argue with cupcakes. (I also can't argue with calling puppies "puppehs," a term I never heard before and will be using from now on.) Lindsay Jacobsen wrote about some local cupcakes in "Cupcake Love" for this month's Current, and there has been fun news recently about several bakeries in her piece:1. Sweet Cakes, of the gorgeous...

The P Bruins

My daughter and I, as part of a fundraiser for her school's PTO, hit the Dunk yesterday afternoon for what was, for both of us, our first ice hockey game. It was great! Didn't hurt that the Providence Bruins won 3-0, of course, but it was fun just to watch the fast action on the ice, flag down the cotton candy man, and dance for the fan cam. And the half-time children's game was precious. But even all that fun was entirely overshadowed by the miracle of finding a free street parking space right opposite the Dunk! It's a sad comment on the downtown parking situation that THAT is what I was still gloating about this morning, not all those handsome men slamming each other against walls. I'll put the $10 saved into my daughter's college fund and, while still rejoicing, know that it's...

Another Way to Help Haiti

The media seems to be doing a fairly good job of keeping Haiti front of mind, continuing to stress the importance of helping out in whatever way we can. It's especially important, because as time passes, "donor fatigue" can set in, and we all move on with our lives, forgetting those that are still being affected directly by the latest disaster, natural or otherwise. If you're looking for a way to help, here's one, with a local connection, that I found especially endearing. Stacie Hall, fashion designer and owner of the Pink Pineapple boutiques in Newport and Portsmouth, has pledged to donate one item of new clothing for every $5 donation customers make at her stores. The money will go to the Red Cross, while the clothes will go to NY-based nonprofit Fashion Delivers, which...

So You Want to Be in A Reality Show

Who doesn't these days? Which is why this release from Pink Sneakers Productions (I so wish I worked for a company with that name!) caught my eye. Admittedly, I'm not a huge reality TV buff. I like "Top Chef," and that's about it. Oh and "Jersey Shore" rocks. But I've got no interest in watching strangers look for love or lose tons of weight or swap wives or pump out eighteen kids. What interests me about this new show Pink Sneakers is casting is how specific the guidelines are -- clearly a sign of the times in the super saturated land of reality TV. It's no longer simply, "Do you need to shed the weight equivalent of an entire human being?" or "Are you drop dead gorgeous and still can't land a (rich) man?" Behold, the guidelines:Are you a...

Home and Away

Just returned from Cape Cod -- at 7:00 a.m. sharp this morning, there were already long lines at the polls.Unrelated:  MSF/Doctors Without Borders is in need of donations to their emergency fund. Funny, it now seems antiquated that they don't have a donate-by-text option, but you can give here. And as Jenna posted the other day, a great fundraiser for the organization is happening on Thursday at Roger Williams Park Casino.(And since I'm at it and the text option is so amazingly easy and effective, you can send $10 to the Red Cross by texting "Haiti" to 90999.)

Mass. Politics Revealed!

On the eve of a historic senate race in Massachusetts that may have long-reaching effects on the future of health care, I was apparently the last person to find out that Republican contender Scott Brown has a centerfold under his belt. Not that it has anything much to do with the campaign, but it does remind me that almost-nude strange men just don't have the same affect on me that almost-nude strange women seem to have on most men. When I first saw the spread, I swear I felt my skin crawl back away from the screen. But on further inspection, the 80s aesthetic is kinda cool, as is the refreshing inattention to body hair grooming. With this kind of media exposure from back in his college days, no wonder Brown's campaign ads are so much more fluid and likeable than Coakley's. If there...

Helping Haiti

In light of the suffering going on in Haiti and among Haitian Rhode Islanders, I thought it would be best to scrap the lighthearted topic I'd planned to write about and instead draw your attention to a local fundraiser for earthquake victims.  State Democratic Party Chairman Bill Lynch and state Republican Party Chairman Giovanni Cicione are hosting a bipartisan event at Roger Williams Park Casino from 5:30-8:30 on Thursday, January 21. The suggested donation is $25 and will benefit Doctors Without Borders.
