The Best Slice of Pizza in Town

Over the last two-plus months of living in Providence, I have done extensive research on the pizza situation here. My selection for best slice of pizza may not be yours, but I’m not here to argue.

The Best Slice of Pizza in Town: That’s a bold claim to make, and if I’m going to make it, you should know my credentials.

There are two:

  • For my ninth birthday, my mom arranged for the birthday party to take place at a local Papa Gino’s where I made my own pizza. By all accounts, it was delicious.
  • Among the three items I know how to cook as an adult is the classic English Muffin pizza.

Over the last two-plus months of living in Providence, I have done extensive research on the pizza situation here. My selection for best slice of pizza may not be yours, but I’m not here to argue.

I asked at work and everyone said Caserta Pizzeria (121 Spruce St., Providence, 401-621-3628, casertapizza.com) is the best in town. Located right off Atwells Avenue with all kinds of parking, I went there fully expecting to have the pizza but their sign said, “Home of the Wimpy Skippy." I’m thinking that whatever this Wimpy Skippy is has to be better than the pizza. They’re not saying that it’s the home of pizza, so I get the Wimpy Skippy.

The Wimpy Skippy is a title that begs all kinds of questions:
What makes it Wimpy?
Are there other kinds of Skippy’s? Indifferent Skippy or Overaggressive Skippy or Judgmental Skippy?

As far as I could tell, it was a calzone-type situation with spinach, pepperoni and cheese, and not a hint of Skippy peanut butter anywhere. . I did go back and get the pizza. Straight cheese classic. Ate the whole thing in one sitting. Delicious. However, for reasons that’ll be explained in the next paragraph, Caserta’s couldn’t get my vote. Besides, if I went with the first place I visited, this would be the shortest blog post of all time. Back to the action…

Next up, Providence Coal Fired Pizza (385 Westminster St., Providence, 401-454-7499, providencecoalfirepizza.com), another overwhelmingly well-recommended establishment. We get two pies: a Margherita (tomato, mozzarella and fresh basil) and a special barbecue chicken number. Each of them was more delicious than the last, with fabulously friendly service, beautiful decor and plenty of TVs for your mid-meal sports fix. Surely that would be enough to win Best Slice of Pizza in Town. But, here’s the catch: you can’t buy a slice there, you have to get the whole pie. And so, the search continued…

More than one person said that Figidini (67 Washington St., Providence, 401-808-6886, figidini.com) was the place to go. I stopped in during a weekday lunch, and the place was packed. Off to the bar I went, and soon enough, I eagerly awaited that day’s special: a pie with cremini mushrooms, ricotta cheese and cured bacon/pork. Not only are you unable to buy a slice here, but Badger from “Breaking Bad” would be psyched because the pizzas are uncut! They pass the savings onto you! I have to admit this before we go any further: I have eaten way too much Elio’s pizza out of the toaster oven to sit down and use a knife and fork and still feel good about myself in the morning. Can’t vote for Figidini.

Pizzeria Gusto is next on the list (259 Broadway, Providence, 401-490-7272). Now we’re talking.

Very friendly service? Check.
Delicious pizza you can buy by the slice? Sure.
Ample wall coverage of framed Boston sports memorabilia? You betcha.
Lightning fast delivery RIGHT TO YOUR FRONT DOOR? Oh, baby, yes indeed.
Things are starting to get very interesting, and then…

I found it.: The Best Slice of Pizza in Town.

Slices of Sicilian doughy goodness so thick, you could build a house with them.
Warm, cheesy handfuls of heaven filling your belly seconds after you place your order.

Antonio’s Pizza by the Slice (256 Thayer St., Providence, 401-455-3600, antoniospizza.com).

Is there plenty of parking? No.
Are they a national chain? Um, yeah.
Am I willing to overlook imperfections in the pursuit of the Best Slice of Pizza in Town?
You better believe it…

The question now is: Is the best slice also the best pizza? That's a story for another day...
