Mad for Mole in Newport
I finally made it to Perro Salado in Newport, and if my margarita-muddled mind serves me correctly it was pretty damn good. No surprises there given that our restaurant critic, Karen Deutsch, awarded the modern Mexican restaurant three and a half stars back in December (if you follow Karen’s work, she’s not exactly liberal with the stars).
Personally, they had me hooked at the blood orange margaritas (with wonderfully generous pours of Herradura Reposado tequila). My loyalties were confirmed with the addictive sticky pork ribs and reaffirmed with the fish tacos and chicken mole.
The historic house, carved into intimate rooms, also deserves a shout-out. Hit up the cozy back bar; there’s a roaring fire and, in my experience at least, a super fun, friendly crowd. (I’m still not sure who actually bought us that second round.)
So, in a nutshell, you should check it out. And if you want a really good deal, go on Tuesday (half-price entrée specials) or Sunday ($10 entrée specials).
P.S. Be on the lookout for the group's latest Aquidneck Island venture -- El Perrito, a taqueria, opening this spring on Thames. More details when we have them....
