2012-04-19Trinity Rep's Boeing-Boeing Delivers Sky-High LaughsThere’s really no way to avoid it. Fred Sullivan Jr.’s take on the 1960s French hit Boeing-Boeing will reduce you to tears. Cover-your-face, gasping-for-air, tears of joy, that is. Joe Wilson Jr. plays architect Bernard, a playboy living in Paris who juggles affairs with three international airhostesses, Gloria the American, played by Rebecca Gibel, Gabriella the Italian, played by Liz Morgan, and Gretchen the German, played by Amanda Dolan. And the affairs aren’t casual; we learn at the start that he’s given engagement rings to them all. His system for their arrivals and departures is mathematic, and, with the help of his disgruntled French maid, Bertha, played by Nance Williamson, Bernard even reworks his whole lifestyle — different throw... 2012-04-19What it Feels like to be a Boston Marathon 2012 FinisherI ran 26.2 miles through eight different towns and cities in eighty-eight-degree heat. It was one of the biggest accomplishments of my life, and I am so proud that my hard work and common sense powered me through the Boston Marathon. Posted at 10:44 AM in ridaily Sports | Permalink

2012-04-17The Best of the RestWe’re just past the halfway mark. Voting for the Best of Rhode Island readers’ poll will close in less than two weeks. It’s not every day you get the chance to vocalize loudly your love for your favorite local businesses. And in this poll, your voice certainly counts. Back in 2008, when I was still in college, I was home in Lincoln for a dentist’s appointment. Flipping through the August issue of Rhode Island Monthly in the waiting room, I came across the readers’ poll results for Best of Rhode Island. A tried and true Rhode Islander, I was already aware of most of the businesses that won. Wright’s Dairy Farm? I get a strawberry shortcake cake every year on my birthday. Coffee Connection? Caramel apple latte, please. Teddy Bearskins? I wish... Posted at 10:08 AM in Events ridaily | Permalink

2012-04-11Jump!-ing Around Providence and BeyondTucked inside a Trinity United Methodist Church building on Broad Street in Providence on Tuesday nights, you can find kids dancing to strains of Stravinsky. They're part of the Jump! Dance Company, which was long based on Providence's East side before moving to its current location this fall. It's composed of about twenty dancers, mainly from the Providence area. What sets the group apart is that the dancers themselves are the choreographers and performers, artistic director Mary Paula Hunter says. They're not supporting an adult dance company."They are the company," she says. The group, which has performed on the streets, libraries and museums, is "constantly making site-specific work." They've appeared in Martha's... Posted at 07:18 PM in Theater Art ridaily | Permalink

2012-04-10Titanic Mania, 100 Years LaterWith the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic just days away on April 15, we’re wondering how connected Rhode Island is to the most famous shipwreck in American history. According to quahog.org, the “Unsinkable Molly Brown,” a first-class Titanic survivor who was represented in the 1997 film by actress Kathy Bates, summered in Rhode Island. Though she was originally from Colorado, Brown divulged her Titanic tale for the first time to a newspaper in Newport. John Jacob Astor IV, who was the wealthiest man aboard the Titanic, did not survive the disaster, but often summered in Newport prior to his death. Thanks to encyclopedia-titanica.com, we’ve also been able to track down some Rhode Island survivors and victims who weren't as... Posted at 01:07 PM in Events ridaily State of Mine | Permalink

2012-04-06Going Back to the LandThe opening of Lucas Foglia’s show last Thursday night was crowded, and for good reason: "A Natural Order" is a beautifully presented portrait of an emerging artist’s work. The Brown University graduate also celebrated his ties to the Providence community, having lived in Providence for several years after graduation. Many people who I spoke with shared their personal memories of Foglia with me. Foglia’s photographs explore the lives of people in the southeastern United States who choose to live almost entirely off of the grid. The people in the photographs come to this lifestyle for varied reasons, including environmental concerns and religious reasons. Many of the photographic subjects pick and choose what pieces of modern technology they prefer to... Posted at 04:46 PM in Art ridaily | Permalink
