Be a Part of History

Here's one way to relish in the eighty-plus-degree weather forecast for Saturday: This Bristol Fourth of July Committee is calling anyone and everyone who's interested to come down to Independence Park at 1:30 p.m. to be part of an aerial photo of participants spelling out the numerals "225" in honor of the town's 225th consecutive Independence Day celebration, happening this year. Everyone is welcome, even if you're not from Bristol; the town is hoping to get between one thousand and two thousand people taking part to make the photo really spectacular. So head on down to Bristol and become a part of history!

Dinner for a Cause

As if we needed another reason to go out for dinner (it's Wednesday... or Monday works just fine), along comes the sixth annual Dining Out for Life to benefit AIDS Project Rhode Island. The idea is super simple: eat out at a participating local restaurant -- we're talking places like the Rue, Castle Hill, Rasoi, and CAV -- tomorrow night (Thursday April 29th) and 25 percent of your food bill goes toward the cause. It's a nation-wide initiative, and more than thirty area restaurants have signed on. For a complete list of restaurants and all the delicious details, click here.

You Had to Be There

There was a small moment during Trinity's matinee of The Odd Couple this past Sunday that sums up live theater: A pickle, slapped off an actor's plate during a poker game, flew out to the front row and hit a lady in the shoulder. The audience shrieked (did that just happen?) before erupting into laughter, while equally stunned actor Joe Wilson, Jr., clutching his empty plate, covered his mouth with a napkin and tried for all his life not to crack up. He didn't really succeed, and neither did his cast-mates, to the total delight of the audience. As for the pickle victim, a neatly dressed woman with white hair perfectly pinned into an updo, she gamely rose from her seat, scooped the pickle from the floor, and -- to wild applause from the audience -- tossed it back at the actors, where it...

Polar Challenge - live updates!

So remember Ellen Piangerelli, the Providence resident who is participating in an icey endurance fest, the Polar Challenge? Well you can now catch up with her as she and her two teammates - they're currently in fifth place -  race against competitors from all around the world over 320 nautical miles of snow to the magnetic North Pole. The Polar Challenge website offers a map of contestants' progress, photos of the glorious scenery (they've been lucky with the weather so far) and daily diary calls. It's totally addictive. Go Team America!

Om-azing

Happy Friday! What're your plans for the weekend? If nothing else, I'm hoping to get to a yoga class at the new Shri Studio in downtown Pawtucket. The space (in the McDevitt Building) looks beautiful and at 3,000 square feet it's the largest yoga studio in the state, according to its owners. Shri boasts a rather extensive class schedule, including free (donation-based) community sessions every Tuesday. I've also got my eye on owner Alison Bologna's "Urban Bhakti Groove" class, with a faster posture flow, chanting, western music and a longer closing meditation. The studio plans to deliver on its "urban revitalization yoga" tagline by donating proceeds from some...

Happy Earth Day!

It's Earth Day, everyone! What are you doing to celebrate? There are a ton of events going on around the state, and clean-ups this weekend that everyone should make an effort to help out with. But if something like that just isn't for you, consider taking advantage of one of the many deals being offered by national retailers in honor of the holiday. The perks being hawked either serve to highlight the beauty of the Earth (like the free download of the first episode of BBC Earth's "Pole to Pole" series) or promote environmentally friendly habits (such as the free reusable tote from Babies 'R' Us or the free dill and basil seed packets tucked inside select boxes of Triscuits to encourage home gardening). Click here for the complete list of deals.

From Kitchen to Market

Good news came in the way of a press release from the EDC yesterday. Turns out, the state may finally get its first incubator kitchen, called Hope & Main, housed in the former Main Street School in Warren. It seems like a no-brainer: vacant buildings are bad; and incubator kitchens help all sorts of talented, creative, ambitious folks get their food-based businesses off the ground and to market. We all eventually reap the benefits in the form of crazy-good locally produced foods, from jams to salsas to pies to whatever our local culinary entrepreneurs can dream up.The idea is still in the planning stages, but the goal is to have kitchen facilities that can be rented out by the hour or month as well as plenty of on-site business mentoring (marketing, graphic design, accounting,...

The Egyptian Chariot and Afternoon Revelry

The Egyptian Chariot and Afternoon Revelry

Pippa keeps feeding me good blog stuff: Yesterday, she spotted photos and video of Brown student Sean Bagge's handmade Egyptian chariot, which he created at Keeseh Studio in Pawtucket out of bent hardwood, raw hide, leather and some nifty mechanical engineering. (People are awesome.)I was just talking to Keeseh founder Asher Dunn, who is down at Brown this afternoon to watch Sean's chariot in action at a mock Egyptian battle being staged for professor Laura Bestock's Ancient Egyptian Warfare class. He estimated a crowd of about 500 down there, which sounded about right from the roar in the background I could hear on the phone. ( "They're getting into formation and are about to attack each other with cardboard swords," said Asher.) He sent me some great pics, but I can't get more than...

Adam Emery back in the news

Adam Emery, who some believed jumped off the Claiborne Pell Bridge with his wife Elena back in 1993 - her remains were found; his weren't - is about to be placed on the FBI's wanted list, according to the Providence Journal. Emery killed an innocent man, Jason Bass, after a traffic mishap at Rocky Point in August 1990. He was charged with second degree murder the day he and his wife parked their car on the bridge and disappeared. We did a story on them back in our 20th anniversary issue, May 2008. I was shocked to read in Sunday's ProJo story that Jason Bass's family didn't find out that Adam had been declared dead in RI until that story came out - four years later. The family also wrote to us to tell us what a wonderful man Jason was. That certainly seems to be true. It's both sad and...
